Saddle Seat
Information and Videos

Saddle seat is an English style of riding that is designed to show off high-stepping breeds of horses, especially the trot. It is performed on the flat and does not involve jumping. Unlike hunt seat, riders sit back in the saddle and holds the hands higher, and in equitation classes, are penalized for sitting forward.

The types of high-stepping horse breeds most commonly used in competition include; American Saddlebred, National Show Horse, Tennessee Walking horses, Racking horses, Spotted Saddle Horses, Morgans, and Arabians.

The types of classes include:

Three Gaited for American Saddlebreds at the walk, trot, and canter

Five Gaited is also for American Saddlebreds with the walk, trot, canter, as well as, the rack and slow four beat gait

Plantation Walker is for Tennessee Walkers-flat walk, running walk, and canter

Park is a competition class for Morgans and Arabians to show off their high-stepping at the walk, trot, and canter

Pleasure is competition in almost every breed where manners and performance are judged more important than high action

Classic or Country Pleasure is judged on manners of the horse at the walk, trot, canter, and are required to back

Equitation competitions are judged on the rider's position or form and aide's
