Natural Horsemanship Information and Videos
Natural horsemanship evolves from appealing to a horse's natural instincts and the way they interact with each other within a herd. The handler or trainer uses the same types of body language and gentle pressure to encourage the horse to do what is asked. This is similar to horses within a herd that use gestures with ear movement, showing of teeth and so on to get another horse to move away or get out of their space! Do you have a natural horsemanship training video of you and your horse? We would love to see it! You can submit your video and training story below!
The handler uses training techniques that make the horse feel calm and safe. This encourages a closer bond between horse and handler, as well as, a more well rounded and content horse. Training emphasizes groundwork techniques that build a base of trust and boundaries. Applying gentle pressure as a "cue" then releasing immediately after the horse responds is the basic technique in this type of training.
The pressure allows the horse to think about what is being asked and if they make a step in the right direction, the pressure is released letting the horse know they made the right decision. Consistency and the right timing in releasing pressure is key in letting the horse know they are doing the correct action. Some of the most well known trainers are Clinton Anderson, Stacy Westfall, John Lyons, and Pat and Linda Parelli. They are all amazing and I highly recommend them to anyone wanting to learn this style of training. We always use natural training with our horse Katie and she responds very well. Although these trainers are absolutely fantastic, their training packages and DVD's can be quite expensive well up into the hundreds or thousands if you buy the whole package. If this is out of your price range you might try Eric Bravo's training system and download it instantly with a 60 day full return guarantee. Eric has been training and riding wild and abused horse's for over 20 years! I highly recommend his Training System.
