Horse Shows Information and Videos
Horse shows can be so much fun! Having the opportunity to show off your horse and riding skills can be an exhilarating experience. There are many types of shows from open, all breed local ones to international competition level exhibitions. There are open classes and specified breed classes and shows can last from one to three days depending on the competition.
On this page you will find some videos of Trinity riding Katie in open, all breed equitation and pleasure classes-these were her first year showing with Katie in walk, trot classes after a couple months of bringing her home.
Also you will find links to pages with video demonstrations on preparing for exhibition; braiding, clipping, and more, as well as, types of exhibitions.
We would love to hear from you about your showing experience! Have a great show photo and story of you and your horse?
This video is their first time out in walk, trot-18 and under class with 9 riders, they took 5th place! Not bad for a 7 year old!
How you prepare for an exhibition depends on what type you will be competing in. It is a lot of work to get ready, regardless of what discipline you ride, if you want to present and ride well!
We start the day before the show with bathing and clipping, then the morning of with show sheen, hooves, loading the trailer, rechecking to make sure we haven't forgotten anything; not to mention all the things Trinity has to do to get ready!
So why do we go through all of this to possibly win a ribbon? Fun of course! Of course there are many who show because it raises the value of their horses and some are in it for money or to become the best at their class-whatever the reason, showing, in my opinion, should always be fun and a bonding experience between horse and rider. It should be an opportunity to show off what they have learned together-to be a team.
Here is a video of Trinity and Katie at their second show-13 and under walk, trot-two 4th place ribbons-so much fun:)
As mentioned, horse shows can consist of open or "all breed" or breed specific. Open or "all breed" shows allow horses of all breeds to compete and can be hunter/jumper, western, or a mix of different disciplines, and so on. Breed specific classes or exhibitions are for a specific breed only, such as, American Quarter Horses and so on. At the international level, the ten disciplines are vaulting, dressage, endurance, combined driving, reining, eventing, show jumping, horse ball, tent pegging, and paralympic (for athletes with disabilities).
The United States Equestrian Federation oversees the Olympic U.S. Equestrian Team and American equestrian sports. It also sanctions show hunter and equitation-disciplines that are not recognized internationally. Other organizations include; the National Cutting Horse Association, U.S. Eventing Association, U.S. Dressage Federation, and the American Quarter Horse Association, among others.
