Horse Show Preparation: Getting ready takes much work, but it can be a fun time. Spending time bathing, clipping, braiding, and grooming your horse should be a good time if you can do away with the pre-show jitters:) It may seem like performing is the easy part if you have experienced the pre-show frenzy. Those who have come home with a couple ribbons will tell you it's well worth the effort.

Depending on what type of showing you are competing in will determine how you prepare yourself and your horse.
Western riders will wear different clothes than a hunt seat rider and their horses will be prepared differently as well. All horses should be bathed, clean, and well groomed and all riders should dress appropriately for their chosen discipline. This shows respect for the judges and all shows have specific rules for the appearance of horse and rider.
