Horse Riding Information and Videos
Horse Riding Page: Here you will find helpful information and videos about English and Western riding-safety, rider position, rider safety, and much more! To learn more about English and Western disciplines, check out the English and Western pages!
My eight year old daughter Trinity has been riding since she was just three years old. She rode Western until she was five then switched to English. She has been riding English ever since and rides Western when she is not training for shows. Here she is at a lesson when she was three years old on Brewster-seems like a lifetime ago!
There are a number of equestrian disciplines. Discipline just means the style of horseback riding you choose; for example, Western riding can include reining, cutting, barrel racing, trail, horsemanship, and pleasure, etc. English riding can include eventing, hunt seat, dressage, jumping, etc. For a full explanation and videos on English and Western disciplines, see their respective pages.
Equestrian Collections is a great place to buy riding gear for English and Western riders-I love this site! You can buy all things equestrian here and check out their mount up to rewards program. You can also get a 10.00 rewards certificate for your horse on his/her birthday!
The discipline you choose is a matter of what appeals to you personally-some choose one style, then change later on and some may choose several styles like my daughter who rides both English and Western. Here is a video of my daughter Trinity riding Western and English at lessons before we brought Katie home-enjoy!
If you are looking into purchasing a horse of your own it is important to know what type of riding you have a preference for. A Western trained horse will likely not make a good jumper and an English trained horse will likely not make a good cutting horse.
A horse is usually bred for a type of discipline; for example, a horse with Western halter champion bloodlines will probably not make a good jumping horse.
As you can see, it can be critical to know what discipline of horse riding you want to do if you intend on owning a horse-it would be heartbreaking to sell the horse you love because he/she is not able to do the things you need him/her to do!
The photo at left is of Trinity riding her horse Katie English. We purchased Katie because she had a sweet, calm personality, and could be shown English or Western. It took us a couple of years to find the perfect horse for us.
With each horse riding discipline comes the need for different tack. We have two sets of tack for our horse Katie-an English set and a Western set.
English riders, depending on which style they are riding, will require at least the basics of an English saddle, saddle pad, and bridle. And of course Western riders will need at the least a Western saddle, bridle, and pad. Within each discipline there will be other tack that is required-show tack, martingales, and so on.
It is highly recommended that if you are new to horses that you take riding lessons before ever considering purchasing a horse-a good instructor will help you learn how to ride, keep safe, and assist you in finding the right horse for you.
