Horse Riding Safety
Information and Videos

Horse Riding Safety: Equestrian activities can be a wonderful experience when done safely. Many riders can become complacent after time and repetition of riding; whether it is due to becoming accustom to a specific horse or years of experience, it is never a good idea to overlook the safety of you and your horse!

To stay safe, it is recommended that you enlist the assistance of a good riding coach. She/He will be able to guide you to learn what you are doing right or wrong and help you improve on the skills that you have learned.

Do not ride a horse that you cannot handle at your skill level.

Wear appropriate riding attire-helmet, boots, etc.-no flip flops or tennis shoes for goodness sakes!

Always stay alert to your surroundings and how your horse may be reacting to things around him/her.

Never ride alone on a trail if at all possible.

Here is a video on how to fit a helmet before riding by the Certified Horsemanship Association-what type of helmet you should use and how it is positioned.

This video demonstrates how to perform a tack safety check of your horse before you ride-also by the Certified Horsemanship Association and a very thorough video.

This is a great video on safely mounting, dismounting, leading, and riding. Very detailed and covers right and wrong maneuvers. "Saddle up SAFELY is a new rider safety awareness program sponsored by UK HealthCare, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and many community organizations."
